[M1] Study no 1 - Angel

[M1] Study no. 1 Angel - Anjelic is the collaboration I formed with Croatian Composer Jurica Jelic and German sound Artist and environmental sound recordist Marcus Beuter.

Jurica was the first ‘J’ in my JJM formation [index L] with me julian Broadhurst the second and German Wind genius Markus Wenninger as the M hence J - J - M.

JJM was a project for a purpose, a collaboration with one aim, the singular remit of a concert length work Breeze from a short work of that name by Jurica Jelic and played by Markus. That’s how we all met. It was exciting getting to understand each other but it was short lived it didn’t hold the promise of a future as a trio whereas splitting as two separate collaborations it did. Markus and I formed [L] Wenninger Broadhurst a 15 album collaboration lasting into the 2020’s. Jurica and I formed Anjelic - JuliAN-jelic punning on ‘Angelic’ hence the Angel of our first work as trio as it happened with his friend German Sound Artist and Environmental sound recordist Marcus Beuter - both of whom had huge reputations.

In the First public notes I wrote “DCM Studio Disc, hot from the desk at my Isabel Studio. A first collaborative item from Composer Jurica Jelic & Composer producer Julian Broadhurst as Anjelic, the An from me [juliAn] and I think the rest is self explanatory. Not a first album, just testing the waters. The waters here are Jurica's Fretless Acoustic Guitar, recorded together with Live Improvised Electronics, from field recordings, by Sound Artist Marcus Beuter, and my Studio. The Angel in question, well, she is who you'd like her to be.”

The Angel - well who would I want her to be - Well Manon Gropius - Alma Mahler’s daughter by Walter Gropius - who died tragically young and was the Angel Berg memorialised in his Violin Concerto - to the Memory of an Angel that revolutionised music. I dedicate this album to her - so her memory is to me - I dedicate it also to Alban Berg - my lifelong hero.

I beg the comparison with Wenninger Broadhurst’s first release the seminal - [L1] First reply to Markus - as a ‘First reply to Jurica, it is just as good. Yes I was the producer of both but I think - and the others agree - that we really had something in these two albums.
I styled it as Study no. 1 - Angel - to bounce the pun. It is not a studio disc it our real and very welcomed first album as the Anjelic trio another time JJM another Jurica, Julian - Marcus but this time with a ‘c.’ Marcus left at this point it was not his bag. Jurica and I made another Album [] Blood and the soil it is good but that was it - Jurica and I were laughing buddies for years after wards - he is a wonderful man I love him dearly. Please discover his work. The same goes for Marcus it was pleasure to work with him - a very interesting man please discover him also.

The Name JJM stuck with me as a subgroup of my DCM Label - as an on-line platform for International Collaboration.


[K1] Breeze - Leaving the fertile and well trodden lands of Leicester behind - I set out into the unknown - I had to make the break, it was time. There was nothing more for me there at that time [2012]. I was up for something completely fresh and found it in JJM.

A double Album of Concert music for Flute duet, music for minimal forces on a huge scale; created in a new three-way collaboration. JJM - who are, Croatian Composer Jurica Jelic ; English composer Julian Broadhurst and German Wind Specialist Markus Wenninger.

I heard this piece - Breeze and set out to find the Flautist - German Specialist Markus Wenninger and asked him if he was up for collaboration on it - rather with it. He was but said I needed to ask Croatian composer Jurica Jelic - so I did hence J - J - M, Jurica, Julian, Markus.

He gave me his wealth of experience as an internationally important wind specialist - catapulting WB into that stratosphere. As a composer it has been mind-bending to work with him.”
