LX] Her Sad Infamy Sings

[LX] Her Sad Infamy Sings - A solo album for Markus with English Composer Martin Gaughan, where Markus played Martin’s score ‘Her Sad Infamy Sings’. Not Strictly a WB project but we are all friends and I pushed hard for it, for them both - I mastered it and published it on DCM - even styling their collaboration ‘Wenninger Gaughn’. It is not a collaboration of mine so it can’t have an Index letter but it belongs here as Album for Markus and for Martin that I made happen. [2016]. Martin has set a poem of mine as his Fourth, a choral, Symphony and another as small Chamber Opera.

[L15] Music in the wake of Konnyek - As a special treat - for our 15 release - we present Markus' part for the Konnyek Duet - but here for his beloved Soprano flute - recorded Live at his Studio in Berlin 2020. We didn’t though know then, that with the collapse of my hearing, it would be our last.

[L14] Konnyek - for Amplified Duet. A Solo for Drum I developed for my Konnyek Collaboration with Serbian Pianist Marina Vesic at the start of our [N] Konnyek Collaboration in October 2012. I then published that recording in my Drum music Genre Dm as an open work, to test some future accompanist in a duet.

Markus, being Markus, wanted to take up the challenge and here are ‘we’ - on our 14th album together as WB - surprising and outrageous as ever. Here we are as an amplified duet where he accompanies me - or, did I accompany him ?

Between Windhaus and the Konnyek albums L13 to L14 - 15 are two other DCM projects.

Anderson Morning 4 - [] They Make Music [An Opera for voices]. On my MSEP Discography (2019) and S'ra-D'juil 25 : [] Trio in Five Parts - with Flautist Sara Minelli (2019).

[L13] Windhaus for Anna - Music in the wake of Beriom - is in all respects a solo album by Markus Wenninger and should be regarded as such - but the connections to WB and to me - Julian Broadhurst - are both Physical and Consequential so in that sense it it is truly our 13th album. This time - it is his composition after mine.

Markus heard a huge multi part series of mine - Beriom - after several fragments of Berio in 12 parts. It runs to 10 CD albums. Parts 1 to 3 for six Trombones - Parts 4 to 12 for five or six flutes - Parts 8 to 12 [with the addition of electronics] are albums in themselves - several over an hour in length. Markus being Markus - the experimental Genius that he is - said that he must learn them - cogitate and absorb them. He then responds to me [as I have so often responded to him] - in music - in a series of Twelve solos for several types of flute. He uses a full range of extended techniques - vocalisation and Performative noises such as the tapping of the keys - to respond consecutively to each of my pieces in these 12 solos of his own. He uses Silence copiously - with percussive and fragmentary phrasing - in brevity and depth.

They were given live to the empty Nave of an Abbey Church in Brandenburg - in the environs of Berlin. As promised we will not Identify it - suffice to say it is a Beautiful and Holy place - if somewhat damaged in the war. Markus - alone on the stage - takes his breath - looks up and begins to play. He performs all 12 solos in one amazing, continuous take - a flawless performance - exactly as you hear it. He indicated precisely the start and finish of each of the parts - in the silence.

I'd say he is a force of Nature. I am very proud to have been somehow the inspiration for these. Yet again our friendship has resulted in music of quality - a contemporary masterpiece is born.

The Title ‘Windhaus for Anna’ is his - the Subtitle ‘music in the wake of Beriom’ is mine.

Julian Broadhurst 18.10.18

Between Neble and Windhaus there was an ocean of other DCM projects - 9 albums.

Tetlow & Broadhurst 18 and 19 : [] Improbable Live [] Bau Out (from Kornu session January 2017). [T] - ACCORTUMN - with D. Dhonau & M. Sole : [] Autumn - Winter (January 2017) : D'juil 21 & 22 : [] Later Blue - [] PRecital (early 2017). [U] - Sonn JAA - with Composer Sonja Grossner : [] Wind and Whatever (October 2017). Ensemble Et Au 2 : [] One Flew Over (July 2018). D'juil 23 & 24: [] In Nomine - [] Textures on an English Ground (Autumn 2018).

[L12] Neble B & C - The second album of two - collecting the A - B & C components, of this Neble set of works.

Neble B - Rh 462 is a 13 minute flute solo - note Herr Wenninger’s extended techniques, making him by degree, one of the world’s greatest Flautists.

Neble C is a set of two Intimae [an Intimate piece].

Intimae no. 1 - Rh 463 is a Duet for 2 flutes and Herr Wenninger.

Intimae no. 2 - Rh 464 is a trio for flute duet and a clarinet. Whre the Duet is a group within the trio and is one of our most advanced Chamber works at over 38 minutes. We call for some serious listening.

In another life I might have given them opus numbers but in this life I give them Rh Catalogue numbers, tying them to my Rh Composition catalogue - as if complexity wasn’t enough. There are three lettered components - Neble A - C. Neble A - the last album is a suite. I solved this thorny Demarking problem by invoking my long established Works catalogue. Thus Neble A became - Rh 461 - Neble B is then - Rh 462 - and Neble C became - Rh 463 and 464 for its two pieces. Note please a Piece not a Part - where a Piece is a Work - a nominated expression as an independent Creative Expression hence the given - Rh mark. The divisions of Neble A are not works in themselves but only parts of a whole - of that Rh number.

This now clearly shows the relative importance of the divisions in the referenced pieces.

These consecutive Neble albums were released in March 2016. There were 4 DCM projects between them and the Wenninger Broadhurst 8, 9 and 10 releases of November 2014.

Tetlow & Broadhurst 16 & 17: [] Frozen - [] Sirius A (late 2014/January 2015) : Anderson Morning 3 -: [] AM3 (May 2015) and [R] - NATIONAL STEEL BLUE - with Burnt Paw : [] Blues Suite 1 & 2 (June 2015).

So why not a double album ? Well, it was just the way the soufflé fondled.

[L11] Neble A - Presenting a large new Work - a suite for Clarinet and Electronics in six parts - performed here by Berlin Wind genius Markus Wenninger - with me as Composer, producer and studio technician.

It takes a very long theme through a variety of transformations - with an interesting use of long bespoke, Punctuative pauses - respectful of each of the sound envelopes - but also marking the respective importance of the sections - thus dividing within the parts themselves. It has beauty - Enjoy !

The first album of two - collecting the A - B & C components, of this Neble set of works - in another life I might have given them opus numbers but in this life I did give them Rh Catalogue numbers, tying them to my Rh Composition catalogue - as if complexity wasn’t enough. There are three lettered components - Neble A - C. A is a suite - B is a solo and C is a set of 2 pieces.

The title - ‘Neble’ - for this album and the next - WB [L11] [] Neble A and [L12] [] Neble B & C is the German verb to become foggy or to obscure with smoke or cloud. His title following that of the improvisation he gave me.

[L10] With wisest sorrow - I took the initial inspiration from Steve Reich - listening to his Music for Six Marimbas, turning that notion of a multiplicity of short notes around in my head. I wanted a feeling of Perpetual motion - for a new project with Berlin based Winds Genius - Markus Wenninger - to become a 10th album for our hugely productive partnership Wenninger Broadhurst. Looking back to our 8th album and its second Piece 'Nhung'- a shorter 'vertiginous duet for Clarinets - named for a new friend of ours Vietnamese Composer Nhung Nguyen'; it seemed to contain the germ cells for something I was looking for, something much bigger. Accordingly I began to construct with the component themes of this, but only those with the shortest notes.- a texture eventually requiring not two but five clarinet lines. There is only one Markus Wenninger - a man unique in the world and he will play all five parts as the Markus Wenninger Quintet - five men in one. I saw the piece 'Nhung' as a possible new direction for us and listening to it, as this project came together, it certainly was.

'With wisest sorrow' dose have that Perpetual feel about it, with most of the parts playing most of the time, though I do pair it down, in many places along its 21 minutes, sometimes to a single line.

I wanted a complete contrast for a second piece, a Yang to its Yin - I hadn't planned it but the idea took shape of returning to the source and examining the sustained phrases. Taking only the sustaining phrases [for the most part] and to compile this time not rhythm, but harmonics - for five clarinets - as it turned out for 31 minutes. This is Big music, we have made longer but not at this density. Very difficult music for instruments of little mutual contrast - Very much 'Inventions for Five Clarinets' - we take a big step forward as a duo.

My working title for the project was 'Spot on' or 'Spoton' for the punctuative - pointillistic textures of the first piece - but come the second ? I had reading Hamlet - my favourite Shakespeare and two of my favourite lines from King Claudius' first speech, to the court, on the Death of his Brother and his hasty marriage to the former queen - Hamlet's mother. Consecutive lines for Consecutive pieces.

"We with wisest sorrow think on him
Together with remembrance of ourselves" Hamlet I.2.6 and 7

Giving 'With wisest sorrow' and 'Together with Remembrance of ourselves' - if you listen to the vowels, in pronunciation, in the first title, they are short, giving clipped Punctuative speech like the music it names. The seconded [line] title has long vowels, and is sustaining, like the music it now names.

'A fascinating, ever changing, mechanical, insect-like kaleidoscope of clarinet sounds. I love it !! Bravo to you both ! - Marc Yeats. British Contemporary Composer and Artist - 21. 3. 2015.

Dear mark - we were once friends - I regret our falling out.

Albums 8, 9 and 10 form a consecutive trio - the 11th and 12th just a few months later.

[L9] - Virtual Glass - The Ninth Album from Wenninger Broadhurst, the longterm musical partnership of German Wind Specialist Markus Wenninger and English Composer Julian Broadhurst. Two contrastingly similar pieces.

Music that isn't difficult, that doesn't require some effort on the part of the listener, doesn't have that pleasure of discovery, when you make the music your own. We adopted two very different approaches, to both the materials and the performance.

In the first piece, 'Essence Else,' we have a game of Harmonic Blending for three Clarinets’. A warmer, close textured piece, woven from short sequences of ideas provided by Markus; thematic germs that encode and displace into complex lines, instrumental parts - which sing together of counterposed harmonics. We call it Essence Else for it being a music of essence, in momentary colours. Thus, in essence, the acoustic of a clarinet trio - helped into existence by Markus playing all three parts. In principle there is no reason why 3 clarinettists couldn't play it live.

In the second piece, the Virtual Glass of the title, we have an Icy cold, brittle solo, sharp like glass, with none of the relative warmth or essence of the first. Instead we have actually an extended solo for one and a half clarinets, formed largely from the germ-lines of the first but melodically elaborated for one instrument to take and hold the stage with the help of an intermittent taped 2nd voice - the Virtual in the mirror.
JB

'Wild, explorative, extreme, beautiful, complex, delicate, beguiling, spectrally captivating music' - Marc Yeats - British Contemporary Composer Nov. 2014

Albums 8 - 9 and 10 form a consecutive group

Wenninger Broadhurst 8 - 10: [] The Unquestioned Answer - [] Virtual Glass - [] With Wisest Sorrow (November 2014).

[L8] The Unquestioned Answer - The answer to a question unasked or not yet given; or of an answer, supplied and not yet challenged, as to it being the answer to the question asked. A Philosophy exam question once asked, 'If this is a Question ?' - to which the correct answer was 'Then this is an answer.' Where that is, that statement would be the answer to any question that would require it as one. And so, this is music for three Clarinets and a Tape of voices. It is said of Herr Wenninger, that he can play three clarinets at once and wind the tape about his hat. Answers, answers but questions not. He is the answer to the question yet to be asked.

Followed roundly by a vertiginous duet of Clarinets - named for a new friend of ours Nhung Nguyen.

This album came a year after the last in November 2014 after : Konnyek 5: [] Horizon : Tetlow & Broadhurst 15 : [] Venus & Adonis : D'juil 18 - 20 : [] Belladonna : [] Arkiv - Art London Live [released 2022] : [] Plateau and [] Vingt .

[L 7] Black Star Music - From Markus’ ‘Performance’ of my Picture ‘Black Star Music 1 [2000]’ to my response Now as a composer - may arranging his detail in improvisation to my Com-Positioning him in 5 Chamber groups for Clarinet. My strap line as an artist obsessed with the geometrically correct five pointed star was -
‘Our Thorns Point in Five Directions’ and here are five chamber groups. All drawn from the very notes and figures Markus played -this is the substance of our collaboration. The second of our visual Art inspired albums after Lollapolusa a few months before. In between them was D’juil 17 [] Elemental String music - it was a busy year.

[L6] Lollapolusa - The Lost Hour - My Spelling - after a series of Pictures of mine from the late nineties - particularly after Lollapolusa 5 - included in the Download notes - and with the Library notes. I’d heard the word but [it wasn’t in the dictionary - no Google back then]. The Odd spelling then refers to that picture series, the picture - no. 5 - that I showed Markus when we were still JJM. Markus had read it as a found Score - his response to it and my response to that et al. An albums worth of material we thought worth releasing - September 2013. We did something similar for the 7th album in the December of 2013. Black Star Music’ after a set of Pictures of that name from 2000 - when he had an obsessive need to make works with black Stars - again he found a score in it. This The Visual phase in our work.

Between Avatar and Lollapolusa with Wenninger Broadhurst were a number of other projects for the DCM Label.

Tetlow & Broadhurst 14 : [] OBAH : Konnyek 4 : [] Sonate Concret : [P] - ALISIAN - with English Harpist Alison Katy : [] Elvaston meadows : [Q] - LORDS OF THE DANCE 1 & 2 with Percussionist Walt Shaw : [] Music for Metal Percussion - [] Electric Surface : D’juil Arkiv : [] Sunrise Festival Live (Aug 2013) [Desk release 2022] : Six albums in total.

[L5] Avatar - Our fifth album, and our First Double as a duo. Avatar is a big work - A Ritual in two parts, for two Clarinets and Degrees of Electronics. Part one is 'Waiting for Avatar' an anticipation, to be followed by the second disc, Part two - Avatar a Gordian knot of primeval woodwind as the rite.

So the brief 2012 text ran and hit the spot perfectly but for the 2023 British Library Edition we’ll expand on that somewhat. First the title Avatar - An embodiment to take to give bodily form - as in the embodiment or form of a Hindu God or Zeus as a Swan or here Markus Embodied as together with himself lonely as a cloud on a stage Dueting with himself - I am on stage with him as the rhythm.

So we have a ritual like the Rite of Spring that awaits the ritual [In the first part] and then in the second huge and complex duet we have the Avatar - the embodiment - the Dance - like a dancer - where we call up a primeval motion to whorl about the stage as in the rite of Spring - this is our Rite of Spring. A very important album for us.

[L4] Red Frame Blue - Now we are celebrating Herr Wenninger as Herr Clarinet. Markus records his playing solo Clarinet in disused spaces for the ambiance there of, to use with his Nora Volca Ensemble - So Works for clarinet and Clarinet Duet were on the cards. Here we have a Suite derived from his initial ideas in 'Red Frame1' an improvisation on a 'found score'. He searches out patterns and marks on surfaces in nature and the built environment, which he perceives as given Graphic score - to be read by him as music as if on composed page.

This I feel is a moot point - the composition of a Graphic score. It is I feel not sufficient for a composer to Claim the Compositional credit for the sound of their graphic score when recorded or given by a performer. They leave the heavy lifting to the performer and claim the credit - tt is at Best a Collaboration and possibly theft. It is the mind of the performer who gives the precise shape to that sound - an improvisation then - as Herr Wenninger here improvises on his ‘Found Score’ - a score without a composer.

I then, in my manner, took his improvisation, on that found notion and Com-posed with it - with its musicality, with his musicality to create another level in three further pieces - not of my possession - but of our collaboration.

For DCM the label a lot of music fell between WB’s first three Albums - Our Wenninger Triptych and this our fourth album - though not so long in time. There was [M] Anjelic 1 with Jurica Jelic and Marcus Beuter: [] Study no. 1 - Angel : Anderson Morning 2 - [] Cabaret Dada : D’juil 16 - [] Old Grey live : Anjelic 2 : [] Blood and the soil : - [N] - KONNYEK 1 - 3 with Marina Vesic: [] Sn for Pn & Percussion no. 1 - [] Sn for Pn & Percussion no. 2 ‘In Tears’ - [] Lady Blue Black (Oct. 2012) : and [O] - REG KEELING - Audio Book : [] A Winters Journey (Oct. 2012) : Eight Albums I total.

[L3] Rohre [Ger.] - 'Pipework'. Clatter and Bang - created to form part 3 of a Triptych of Saxaphonic discs - with 'First Reply to Markus as part 1 and our Decollement Horizon as Pt. 2 of - ‘The Wenninger Triptych. Each treating a set of thematic start points very differently. It is an Album in a real sense, because as a concept, and in its soundworld it is an advance on our Last Album Decollement Horizon. It is Strictly Album 3 - to split a ninth part of a hair. Each of the three parts is an album in and of itself. The Triptych as a notion that floats above our first three releases. We are exploring this notion of a larger work as we go.

Our thoughts here are for the sound of the larger members of the Sax family, of the vast array of rattling Pipework needed to produce each note, like the air ducting on a Berlin office block !

These first three albums stand alone as the Wenninger Triptych after JJM’s Breeze and just before Anjelic’s ‘Study no. 1 Angel. I was hoping there would be a string of studies but that was not to be - German Sound recordist Marcus Beuter really made this album for me ‘A first reply to Jurica’ to coaxes a parallel. Without him it didn’t really work. Jurica won’t mind me saying that, we were friend for years after. He is excited to be in the British Library - Study no. 1 Angel is a very good album. A worthy place to end this JJM block with. After it I heal the break with Leicester - recording a second album with Maureen Anderson as Anderson Morning - and the outrageous rooftop gig with Cellist David Dhonau as D’juil - our Sixteenth Album ‘Old Grey Live.’

[L2] Decollement Horizon - Our second Album together, as Wenninger Broadhurst - Altosaxsophonist & winds Specialist Marcus Wenninger and Composer producer Julian Broadhurst.

A Decollement Horizon [his Title] is a particular kind of percussive injury, resulting in rock or flesh being torn away, The Horizon is then the status of the remaining body - be it rock or flesh. Markus is a medical man as well as an internationally Important Soloist. Our Decollement Horizon, in two parts, began life as two half hour alt sax sketches by Markus that he would challenge me to arrange and compose into a mutual understanding of one anothers Art. This was exciting new music for the both of us. Our first album ‘First Reply to Markus’ is just that - my first distillation of his complex material. This second Album sees important new distillations of new material. A second Response - warranting a separate second Album and hence - the second Part of a Triptych - ‘The Wenninger Triptych’ completed by soon after by a third Album ‘Rohre.’

[L1] First Reply to Markus - JJM was a project for a purpose, a collaboration with one aim, the singular remit of a concert length work from a short work of that name - and it didn’t hold the promise of a future. Berlin Based Wind Genius Markus Wenninger though offered great riches as a Duet. He did extra ordinary things - as an advanced and much in demand soloist, of which people said - that there was nothing you could write that he couldn’t play. As a soloist he would find scores in marks on objects ‘found Scores’ in the built environment and play them. He would improvise to the wind in abandoned buildings - my kind of wonderful I’d say. He said to me ‘what will you need me for ?’

I asked him for some of those improvisations - that I would then study and find structures and figures within to draw out and configure as an act of Com-position-ing - of Com-Provisation - directly through him in a new way of working for me.

This first shortish piece, this First ‘Reply to Markus’ is a landmark in my - in our work. Like whale song Markus said. It felt organic like it had been throughcomposed - it had been, but with sound rather than notation - as if to specify nuance. I had no intention of it ever being given live - the recording is the Work - not just a recording of it. At the time I called it a studio disc where we used to write a days work to disc but it is much more than that it was a new kind of landmark for a new collaboration. It would become the first part of a Triptych of albums - the first three - a grouping in itself.

[] First Reply to Markus - [] Decollement Horizon - [] Rohre.

This collaboration would have a big future that would last years and see 15 albums.

"Some amazing sounds and mesmerising layering !" - Rasa Daukus - Australian Composer, Pianist and Director of music at Canberra University - 18th April 2016

At almost exactly the same time I turned to Jurica Jelic - the other partner in JJM and founded [M] Anjelic - JuliAN-Jelic which had a short but interesting run of two albums. JJM had broken into two viable parts. The Name JJM stuck with me as a subgroup of my DCM Label - as an on-line platform for International Collaboration.

[K1] -Leaving the fertile and well trodden lands of Leicester behind - I set out into the unknown - I had to make the break, it was time. There was nothing more for me there at that time [2012]. I was up for something completely fresh and found it in JJM.

K1] Breeze - A double Album of Concert music for Flute duet, music for minimal forces on a huge scale; created in a new three-way collaboration. JJM - who are, Croatian Composer Jurica Jelic ; English composer Julian Broadhurst and German Wind Specialist Markus Wenninger.

I heard this piece - Breeze and set out to find the Flautist - German Specialist Markus Wenninger and asked him if he was up for collaboration on it - rather with it. He was but said I needed to ask Croatian composer Jurica Jelic - so I did hence J - J - M, Jurica, Julian, Markus.

Jurica - for the original melodies, conception and primary composition, Markus for all Parts on all instruments and Julian for the over all conception, Design and preparation of concert scale works, mixing and postproduction. Jim Tetlow, Graphic Design. Cover Photograph Jurica Jelic.

Quoting from my British music page - “I Left the melting pot of Leicester UK - close to my home - for a first International collaboration - with the wonderful German Wind Virtuoso Markus Wenninger with, whom I would form multi album duo 'Wenninger Broadhurst' after an initial single album as a Trio 'JJM' with Croatian Composer Jurica Jelic. He gave me his wealth of experience as an internationally important wind specialist - catapulting WB into that stratosphere. As a composer it has been mind-bending to work with him.”
